Sweet Apple Smoothie for digestive health maintenance…

The last smoothie I made (using greens) didn’t go well, but this one tastes great! For anyone looking to add more probioitics into their diet, natural yogurt can be helpful. The yogurt that most people buy from a grocery store is full of harmful ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes and flavoring, etc. Kellogg’s yogurt contains BHT & High Fructose Corn Syrup, Chobani contains added flavors and concentrates, many of Dannon’s yogurts contain artificial flavors, potassium sorbate, & other harmful additives.

I personally cannot stand the flavor of natural yogurt – it’s too sour/bitter/blah for me…so I prefer to mix it in with other foods like a meat dish, or in this case – a smoothie. Do NOT cook the yogurt – it will kill the good probiotics – add it in afterward. The ingredients I used:

  1. 1/2 cup prune juice (just natural pune juice, no concentrate, no added sugar, etc)
  2. 1 banana
  3. 1 medium apple
  4. 1/4 cup yogurt (use the most natural/organic yogurt you can get)
  5. 1 serving cup of natural, unsweetened/unflavored applesauce
  6. 1/4 cup of coconut water
  7. 3-5 ice cubes

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. This recipe almost filled 2 red solo cups – makes plenty for you to have one now and put the other one in the fridge for later or share with a friend. You could easily add other ingredients such as ginger, coconut, parsley, cinnamon, etc.

Specific brands I used:

Yogurt: White Mountain Bulgarian Yogurt (I think it’s made in Austin, I bought it at HEB – it’s the best I can find near me)

Coconut juice: VitaCoco 100% Pure Coconut Water

Unsweetened applesauce: HEB Unsweetened Applesauce 6pk

Does food seem to take a long time to digest?

Hair thinning or hairloss?

Vitamin deficiency or anemia no matter what you take or eat?

Stomach problems after eating meat?

Do you use pain relievers, antibiotics, or other Rx often?

Do you have symptoms of IBS, hypothyroidism, heartburn, adrenal fatigue, premature aging…but nothing has worked?

It could be low stomach acid. 

Here’s a quick at-home test:

    1. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 4-6 ounces of cold water first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything.
    2. Drink the baking soda solution. Don’t gulp it, just drink it.
    3. Time how long it takes you to burp. Time up to five minutes.

If you have not belched within five minutes stop timing.

In theory, if your stomach is producing adequate amounts of stomach acid you’ll likely belch within two to three minutes.  Early and repeated belching may be due to excessive stomach acid (but don’t confuse these burps with small little burps from swallowing air when drinking the solution).  Any belching after 3 minutes indicates a low acid level.

What Causes Low Stomach Acid?

It is believed that low stomach acid is caused by chronic use of antibiotics and NSAID pain relievers as well as a diet high in processed foods and refined sugars.

Symptoms of Low Stomach Acid

Low stomach acid(Hypochlorhydria) can cause a variety of different symptoms so it can be difficult to pin down.  Here are the common symptoms of low stomach acid:

  • Chronic indigestion
  • Excessive flatulence
  • Heartburn
  • Chronic candida
  • Hair loss in women
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Acne
  • Rectal itching
  • Autoimmune disease

Health Problems Associated with Low Stomach Acid

In addition to the above symptoms, there are long-term negative health effects associated with low stomach acid.

  1. Acid Reflux

If you’re an acid reflux sufferer and have been using acid reducers and proton pump inhibitors for years, you’ve been tackling the problem the wrong way. Acid reflux disease is not a symptom of too much stomach acid; it’s a symptom of too little stomach acid.

It might sound ridiculous but when you have low stomach acid, your body works hard to pump out an excessive amount to try to digest your food. Your proton pumps work overtime to make up for the deficit. When you feel that burning in your throat and get that bad taste in your mouth, you reach for an acid reducer, which causes even more acid to be produced to make up for an even larger deficit.

Acid reflux can become so severe; your throat will literally close up to the point where you need surgery. Chronic acid erosion in your throat can also increase your risk of developing esophageal cancer.

  1. Malnutrition

Many of the mystery symptoms you experience everyday may be a result of malnutrition. No matter how much you eat or even how healthy your diet has become, you may still not be breaking down enough of the food to assimilate its nutrients. Chronic low stomach acid inevitably leads to multiple vitamin deficiencies, which can lead to even more unusual symptoms you and your doctor cannot get to the bottom of.

  1. Compromised Immune System

When your body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs, your immune system isn’t getting enough support. If you seem to get every cold and flu that’s going around, low stomach acid could be to blame. Eventually, your compromised immune system could lead to the development of an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system begins attacking the body’s own healthy tissues.

  1. Chronic Gastric Upset

Treatment:

The treatment in the short term is to take acid supplementsIndeed, this may explain why cider vinegar is such a popular treatment for many problems – the vinegar acidifies the stomach and improves the digestion of food. Clearly, this has the potential to affect a wide range of conditions. The problem with cider vinegar is that it contains yeast and would therefore not be tolerated by many people.

A second possibility is to take high dose ascorbic acid (vitamin C) at mealtimesThis mildly acidifies the stomach and promotes absorption.

The third approach is to take Betaine Hydrochloride (Betaine HCL), a naturally occurring substance derived from beets. This is available in capsules which need to be taken with food, and the dose adjusted according to the response. People start off with one capsule initially and build up to maybe four or five capsules depending on the size of the meal and the response to treatment. Often in the longer term with the correct diet (low glycemic index, low allergy, smaller meals, get rid of Helicobacter pylori, correct gut flora) this cures the chronic gastritis, and the stomach is again able to produce acid normally.

Loma Linda University  reported that people who ate beans at least three times a week had a 33% reduced risk of colon polyps (which often lead to colon cancer).

Researchers at Colorado State University reported on the anticancer abilities of beans: white kidney beans have greater impact on cancer cells than navy beans, and that more colorful beans have milder effects. Foods that were found to be especially protective against head and neck cancers, which include cancer of the mouth, throat, and larynxthese cancers included beans, carrots, and tomatoes, among others.

1305104161078Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and kale, among others, contain several compounds shown to fight cancer.

Carrots are an excellent source of beta-carotene, a potent antioxidant that has been associated with a reduced risk of various cancers, including prostate, mouth, throat, colon, stomach, and bladder. This does not include beta-carotene supplements – to receive the benefits, carrots must be eaten.

In one laboratory study, capsaicin slowed the growth of prostate cancer cells and prompted apoptosis (cell suicide), while a subsequent study found similar results regarding apoptosis and prostate cancer cells. Capsaicin also fights stomach cancer.

Garlic contains allium compounds that enhance the activity of immune system cells designed to fight cancer – they block carcinogens from getting into cells and also slow the development of tumors.

Mushrooms, including shiitake, reishi, coriolus versicolor, and maitake, have demonstrated cancer-fighting properties. The anticancer abilities are attributed to polysaccharides, including beta glucan, which enhance the immune system and strengthen it against cancer. Mushrooms also contain complex protein/sugar molecules called lectin, which have an ability to prevent cancer cells from multiplying. Another compound in mushrooms is ergosterol peroxide, which can inhibit the growth or prostate cancer cells and prompt apoptosis, according to a study reported in Chemico Biological Interactions. The yamabushitake mushroom has demonstrated potential against human leukemia.

Raspberries have been shown to decrease the number of esophageal tumors. In subsequent studies, black raspberry extracts inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells.

A recent review in Current Medicinal Chemistry reports on the impact of lycopene on cancer in general, and how its potent antioxidant properties help it prevent cell damage and inhibit cell growth. In addition, some case-control studies have shown that greater consumption of tomatoes and lycopene is associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer.

The spice turmeric: Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, appears to involve a blend of anti-carcinogenic, pro-apoptotic, anti-angiogenic, anti-metastatic, immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities. One study showed  it inhibited the growth of both human and animal prostate cancer cell lines.

Why you should avoid Caffeine – it can make you fat, alter your DNA, and it’s toxic.

The LD50 (Lethal Dose 50%) of  caffeine is 192 mg. The lower the LD50 number, the more lethal the substance is. For comparison, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has an LD50 of 11,900 mg/kg. Cyanide has an LD50 of 6.4 mg/kg.

Caffeine is mutagenic for mammalian somatic cells (meaning that is alters your DNA and is passed down genetically to offspring). Mutagenic for bacteria and/or yeast. May cause damage to the following organs: heart, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system.

It has Chronic Effects on Humans: May cause adverse reproductive effects (fetotoxicity, maternal (parnutrition) and birth defects. May affect genetic material (mutagenic). May cause cancer (tumorgenic) based on animal data.

It may cause gastrointestinal (digestive) tract irritation with epigastric pain, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

It affects metabolism and cardiovascular system with symptoms including flushing, palpitations, rapid heart rate, dysrhythmias, hypotension, blood pressure elevation and weight loss, metabolic acidosis.

It may affect brain and behavior/central nervous system. Symptoms may include nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, dizziness, tremor, seizures, convulsions, hallucinations,
somnolence, toxic psychosis, tremors, convulsions, ataxia.

May also affect blood, respiration (hyperventilation), and urinary system (mild increase in urinary volume and urinary sodium excretion), and may directly produce hypokalemia.

Chronic Potential Health Effects: May cause cancer (tumorigen) based on animal studies. May cause reproductive and fetal effects. May cause digestive tract disturbances (increased gastric acid, and pepsin secretion and a decrease in lower esophogeal sphincter pressure), cardiovascular disturbances.

Caffeine also fits the definition of an addictive substance, with withdrawal symptoms, an increase in tolerance over time, and physical cravings.

Caffeine is metabolized in the liver.

It increases lipolysis, leading to elevated glycerol and free fatty acid levels in the blood plasma.

It dilates blood vessels and increases urine volume.

Caffeine crosses the blood–brain barrier that separates the bloodstream from the interior of the brain.

Caffeine acts as a nonselective antagonist of adenosine receptors. The caffeine molecule is structurally similar to adenosine, and binds to adenosine receptors on the surface of cells without activating them (an “antagonist” mechanism of action). Therefore, caffeine acts as a competitive inhibitor.

Caffeine tolerance develops very quickly, especially among heavy coffee and energy drink consumers. Complete tolerance to sleep disruption effects of caffeine develops after consuming 400 mg of caffeine 3 times a day for 7 days. Full complete tolerance of caffeine was observed when subjects consumed 750–1200 mg per day.

Withdrawal symptoms — headache, irritability, an inability to concentrate, drowsiness, insomnia and pain in the stomach, upper body, and joints — may appear within 12 to 24 hours after discontinuation of caffeine intake. This peaks at roughly 48 hours, and usually last from one to five days, representing the time required for the number of adenosine receptors in the brain to revert to “normal” levels. Analgesics, such as aspirin, can relieve the pain symptoms.

Caffeine can lead to a condition known as ”caffeinism.” Caffeinism combines caffeine dependency with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions including nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscle twitching (hyperreflexia), insomnia, headaches, respiratory alkalosis, and heart palpitations. Personal note: I’ve been caffeine-free for about 8 months now. I’d given up caffeine a few years ago, but I went back to it after some stressful events. Caffeine just made me feel good/happy and I craved it when I felt bad or stressed.

The 1st time I gave it up was super-hard. I was consuming 8-16 cans of Coca-cola and energy drinks a day(insane, I know!). I switched that out to diet Coke and diet Pepsi, then I switched that out to strong tea. I gradually weakened the tea until I was just drinking water. I could not go cold-turkey because I have severe migraines. I had to slowly step it down.

This time, I went from energy drinks and soda straight to water. I had to use some Excedrin to get me through the 1st week. I naturally have 2-5 baaaaaad migraines every year (since I was about 2 years old). As long as I was consuming caffeine I wouldn’t have any, but if I was ever in a situation where I went without it for more than 6 hours – it would induce a monster migraine that would leave me crying in a fetal position. That could be several times a week. I much prefer to deal with my “regular” migraine episodes. I’ve only had 2 since I stopped consuming caffeine this last time. It’s also easier now for me to notice the signs of a migraine coming on – which means I have time to do a few things to take the edge off so that they don’t last as long and aren’t as severe.

Remedy for gray hair & baldness

Onion juice

Research has found that grey hair is primarily caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide at the root of hair follicles and that this is due in great part to a reduction in the natural antioxidant compound catalase. In addition to helping cleanse the scalp and follicles, onion juice also promotes the production of catalase. Catalase prevents grey hair as well as promotes thicker hair follicles. It is also shown to work for the skin condition vitiligo.

How-to: Divide your hair into four sections, then apply the onion juice on your scalp not on your hair. Massage gently and leave it on for 15 minutes till 1 hour, then rinse you hair well. Apply it daily and after 2 weeks ( at least) you may see great results. Shampoo afterwards to help remove the onion odor.
